Egil Skallagrimmson, Rune Scholar of the 1000 century
In the chapter of "Reinventing the Wheel" which is in the book titled "Sacred Contracts" by Carolyn Myss, Ms. Myss mentions Egil Skallagrimmson and he being a Rune scholar.
When I read that, I knew I was just going to have to start a thread about him here in the Rune section. I, personally, do not get along well with runes, and so I do not use them. But I thought it was fascinating that this man was a scholar of rune reading and lived before the year 1000.
Naturally I had to do some research on him! and, of course, wikipedia didn't let me down. Not that wikipedia has a lot on him, but it does give a bit of information on him.
It doesn't give much about his rune reading days, save when he carved runes to put a curse on King Eirik and Queen Gunnhildr. Here is a site that speaks of runes and also speaks of Egil here: http://www.therunesite.com/egils-saga/#chapter58
I only glanced through it quickly, but it looks pretty interesting!

Interesting, Egil seems as though he inscribed bind runes upon the pole as a curse for the king.
it would be interesting to see what type of runes he used.
they all sound german so could be the Elder Futhark, which are germanic in origin.
might have to research him a little more
